Book to Screen

Pupils will engage in analysis of text and moving image, leading to a greater understanding of both the author's and filmmaker's crafts.  Book to Screen will encourage pupils to become more perceptive readers of the word and visual image.

Book to Screen was a project between Julie Laslett from Dramatic Media and Julia Jarman award winning children's author, with their local middle school, Margaret Beaufort.

The project involved workshops on the author's craft, the screenwriter's craft and filmmaking skills.  A chapter of Julia's book 'Ghost Writer' was studied as novel text, then transposed into a film script and finally the film was shot in the school with pupils and staff.

The process was documented by sixth form media students and all the materials generated by the project have been used throughout the school with great benefits.  The project has had such an impact that we wanted to share the materials with other schools.
